About NSFAS
NSFAS, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme is yet another South African government financial support scheme for assisting potential learners in achieving their academic goals. NSFAS was established in 1991 with this vision and has been there playing an indisputable role by carrying out its financial support programs ever since. The organization has been empowering South Africa socially and economically by improving its funding schemes with new initiatives each year.
NSFAS primarily aims at facilitating South African learners who demonstrate a financial need or physical disability and wish to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate studies at a South African public university or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college., It truly supports the vision that every learner should have equal access to tertiary education despite their adverse financial or physical conditions.
NSFAS Application For 2024
The NSFAS funding program has been initialized to support financially struggling or needy learners looking to pursue their tertiary studies.
The funding scheme encourages learners to apply at UNISA (University of South Africa) and the selected candidates who’ve applied to this university will receive the following financial support till the completion of their qualification:
Tuition fee
Books and study material allowance
Personal care allowance
For any other South African public university or TVET college you’ll get:
Accommodation
Living allowance
Learning material allowance
Personal care allowance
The successful candidates with any disability will also be additionally supported for the following:
Tuition fee
Assistive Devices
Accommodation
Meals
Transport
NSFAS Requirements And Financial Eligibility Criteria
Learners meeting the following criteria are eligible for applying for the funding:
Must be a citizen of South Africa
Must be pursuing or looking to pursue studies in a South African public university or TVET college.
The gross annual income of the learner’s parents or guardian should be less than R350 000 per year.
Learners from needy families or those receiving SASSA grants would be preferred for the funding.
Learners with a disability and an annual family income of less than R600 000 per year would be preferred for the funding.
Please bear in mind that the funding will support the qualified learners till the completion of the qualification they’ve applied for, so there’s no need to reapply if you’re already availing it and continuing with your studies.
How To Apply For NSFAS Online?
NSFAS Account Funding Application:
1.
1. Register online as a user on myNSFAS or re-register a myNSFAS account
· Go to www.nsfas.org.za
· Click on “myNSFAS” tab
· Click on “Register“
· Tick the box to allow NSFAS to verify your details
· Then enter your ID number on the field as it is stated on your South African Identity Document (ID)
· Type in your full names and surname as per your ID number
· Type in your current email address
· Confirm your email address
· Type in your cellphone number
· Create a password
· Confirm password
· Upload your ID Copy
· Click on register
· An OTP will be sent to the email and cell number provided (this OTP expires after 24 hours)
· Type in the OTP and click submit
· You have now completed your re-registration
2. Click the APPLY tab to be directed to the online application form.
Documents Needed To Apply For NSFAS
Prepare certified copies of the following documents which must not be older than 3 months. Your documents must need to be certified at the South African Police Service or the South African Post Office. If you are under the age of 18 or if you are 18 and older and are STILL DEPENDENT on the combined household income of your parent or legal guardian, then this also applies:

A valid copy of your South African ID or unbridged birth certificate. If you are younger than 16 years of age, and do not have a green bar–coded ID or smart ID card, you must submit a certified copy of your unabridged birth certificate.
IDs of parents and/or guardian (death certificate if applicable)
IDs of each person living in your household
Proof of annual household income of your parents or guardian or yourself if employed as a payslip or appointment letter (This is for all types of employment or all forms of income for all members of the household. This includes any income received from SASSA grants, Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), or any retirement, life, disability or other benefits paid as a lump sum or in monthly payments.)
A certified copy of your latest academic transcript or exam results. (If you are currently in Grade 12, you do not need to submit this)
University registration documents (if applicable)
Travel and Accommodation documents (if applicable)
Proof of marital status (if applicable)
Download and complete the consent form and fill it in with the signatures of all people whose incomes have been declared in the application.
If you have a disability, download and complete the Disability Annexure A Form
Any applicant who is recognized as a vulnerable child will be required to submit the Vulnerable Child Declaration form.
NSFAS Closing Date
NSFAS Applications are now open for 2024.
Applications for 2024 will now close on 31st January 2024.

What If The Student Has Forgotten Their Old Username, Password And Cellphone Number, How Do They Reset Their Profile?
Follow the below steps to reset your myNSFAS login details:
1. Go to: www.nsfas.org.za, click on ‘myNSFAS‘ and then select ‘forgot password‘.
2. Type in your ID number and choose what you require help with: password or username or both, then click ‘submit‘.
3. The username and the link to change your password will be sent via SMS and email.
4. Open the link to be redirected to the reset password page.
5. Reset your password by following the prompts on your screen.
Can I Appeal Application?
If your NSFAS application was rejected it may be possible for you to appeal application.
1. Log into to the MyNSFAS portal at https://my.nsfas.org.za/Application/selfservice.jsp
2. Select the Track Funding Progress option.
3. Check the application progress tabs.
4. If your application status is showing as unsuccessful, then the appeal application window is open and you can submit an appeal by selecting the Submit Appeal tab.
5. This will take you to the Application Appeal page, you will now be able to see the reason for the unsuccessful application status.
6. Provide a motivational letter clearing stating the reasons why you are appealing your application status.
7. Upload any certified supporting application documents to support your statement.
8. Click Submit Appeal.
9. You can then track the progress of your appeal via the MyNSFAS portal.
