The NSFAS loan covers essential expenses such as tuition, textbooks, and accommodation. However, not all students are eligible for this NSFAS funding.
As of 2024, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has offered the NSFAS loan for those students who are not eligible for a bursary but still require funding. This NSFAS loan forms part of the Comprehensive Student Funding Model.
The NSFAS loan includes cover for tuition, books, and accommodation allowances. Unfortunately, a transport allowance won't be provided.
In this article, we will explore the common reasons why students may not qualify for NSFAS funding and what those who don’t meet the eligibility criteria can do to explore other financial assistance options.
Here's Who Won't Qualify For A NSFAS Loan
NSFAS has said that they won't provide loans in the following cases:
- Students who have received funding from loans, bursaries (including NSFAS support), or scholarships from sources outside NSFAS, which cover their tuition or allowances.
- Students attending institutions other than public universities or public TVET colleges.
- Students enrolled in programs that are not listed as eligible for loan funding.
- Students who qualify but fail to sign a loan agreement form.
- Any student who does not fulfill the eligibility requirements
NSFAS Loan Eligibility Criteria
- Students must register or have registered for one of the designated programmes eligible for funding under the loan scheme
- Household income must be between R350 000 and R600 000 per year
- Studying or planning to study at a public TVET College or University
- South African citizen or permanent resident
- A student must maintain an average academic performance of 60% to retain the loan funding. Failing to do so may lead to the withdrawal of the loan.
- If a student achieves a 70% average across all registered modules in their program and completes their studies within the minimum time required by the institution’s curriculum, they will be eligible for a 50% discount on their total loan amount. However, this discount is only available if the student has already paid 50% of the NSFAS loan amount.
Alternatives to NSFAS Loans
For those who do not qualify for NSFAS loans, there are alternative options for financial assistance:
- Bursaries and Scholarships: Many universities, private companies, and organizations offer bursaries and scholarships based on academic performance or specific fields of study. These are often more competitive but do not require repayment.
- Bank Loans: Some banks offer student loans with more flexible criteria than NSFAS. However, these loans may come with higher interest rates and repayment schedules.
- Work-Study Programmes: Many institutions offer work-study programmes where students can work part-time in exchange for financial aid or reduced tuition fees.
Understanding the eligibility criteria for NSFAS loans is essential for students and their families as they plan for higher education. If you do not qualify for NSFAS funding, it’s important to explore alternative funding options, such as bursaries, bank loans, or work-study opportunities, to help ensure that your educational goals are still within reach.
